RRCA Accepting Applications for 2013 RunPro Camp     

The 2013 RunPro Camp will be held on July 19-21, 2013, in Arlington, Virginia, at the national office location of the RRCA.  The camp is a companion to www.RunPro.com, which is designed to assist promising distance runners make the transition from collegiate to professional running.

 

Applications for the RunPro Camp are due by May 10, 2013, and may be submitted online at www.RunPro.com or post-marked by that date.  Runners who are completing their NCAA eligibility by June 30, 2013, along with runners who have completed eligibility within the last 24 months, are encouraged to apply to attend the RunPro Camp.

The interactive camp will provide opportunities for runners to meet coaches and athletes from professional training centers, learn about shoe company requirements for sponsorship, determine what type of representation (agents) would be best, find out about elite race recruitment, and how to seek both financial and health support, along with various USATF rules governing professional running including anti-doping compliance.

Reminder: 2013 RRCA Annual Meeting of the Membership   

All members of the RRCA in good standing as of April 1, 2013 are welcome and encouraged to attend the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Membership, which will take place on May 3, 2013 at 3:15 PM (Mountain) at the Hotel Albuquerque, 800 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87014.

The Nominating Committee presents the following slate of candidates for consideration at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Membership:
  • Southern Region Director – Lena Hollmann
  • Western Region Director – Bailey Penzotti
  • At-Large Director – Kelly Richards
  • At-Large Director – Jean Arthur

Voting Assignment and Proxy Certification     

The Bylaws of the RRCA allow for the assignment of a proxy vote for member clubs and events. To assign voting rights to a qualified proxy on behalf of a club or event member, the authorized representative must complete the Official 2013 Voting Rights Assignment to Recognized Proxy Holder Form. Each Appointed Proxy Holder must complete and submit the Membership and Residence Certification for Proxy Holders Form in accordance with the instructions on the forms. The forms and instructions can be found on the RRCA website at www.rrca.org/about/governance/

RRCA Board Recommended Bylaw Updates   

On February 8-9, 2013 the RRCA Board of Directors meet in person in Albuquerque, NM.  During the course of the Board meeting, Vice President Garner outlined the progress with the Strategic Plan Review Task Force, which he chairs.  The Task Force has recommended that the RRCA update the Bylaws to more clearly outline the event management company membership category and to clarify the voting rights of this membership category.

The recommended Bylaw updates will be put to the members for consideration at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Membership.

Congratulations to 2012 Kids Run the Nation Grantees 

Kids Run the Nation.2012 The RRCA is pleased to announce the 2012 Kids Run the Nation grant recipients.  Twenty-eight programs throughout the US including a program at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan, received a total of $21,000 in grants from the RRCA at the end of 2012. In addition, another fourteen programs received over 3,000 complementary copies of the Kids Run the Nation: A Running Guide for Kids booklets to give out to program participants.

Since 2007, the RRCA has provided over $70,000 in small grants to deserving youth running programs around the country through the Kids Run the Nation Fund. The Kids Run the Nation Fund is designed to provide needed resources to launch and support youth running programs around the country as an opportunity to address the on-going inactivity and obesity crisis facing today”s youth.

Inside Track is Online and in the Mail 

Our membership newsletter, Inside Track, outlines best practices in governing and managing running clubs and events. Inside Track is the print newsletter that is mailed to the primary contacts for the RRCA member running clubs and events. Each member club and event receives one complimentary copy of Inside Track 4-times a year. This RRCA publication outlines best practices in club and event governance. It also highlights important RRCA announcements, programs, and services of interest to the leadership in the running community.

Join the RRCA for the Long May You Run Concert

Please join us on January 26, 2013 from Noon-3:30pm for a special afternoon of music. Long May You Run is a benefit concert to promote runner and pedestrian safety in loving memory of Karen Dubin.  Karen, a DC area runner, was hit and killed in 2011 while out on a run due to the actions of a careless driver that failed to follow a pedestrian crossing sign.

The Long May you Run concert includes great performances, great food, a great venue, all in support of a great cause. Ticket cost includes a tax-deductible contribution to the Road Runners Club of America to support runner safety education efforts.

CEC’s for RRCA Certified Coaches at the Convention

RRCA Certified Coaches are encouraged to attend the 54th Annual RRCA Convention to take advantage of four great hours of continuing education opportunities as part of the overall convention education session offerings.  There is no additional fee to attend these sessions, they are included as part of the convention registration fee.

 

Rethink Recovery with Lowfat Chocolate Milk: Nature’s Recovery Drink 

nancy clarkPresented by Nancy Clark, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D.  Clark, an internationally known registered dietitian, board certified specialist in sport dietetics, and author of the best-selling, Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook, will lead the “refuel clinic.” Learn about post-exercise recovery, specifically surrounding lowfat chocolate milk and its many benefits including the perfect carb to protein ratio, 9 essential nutrients and electrolytes.  This session will touch on different studies done across the nation on recovery and offer tips on how athletes can rebuild and refuel their muscles.

The Adolescent Athlete 

EraliRichard P Erali, DPM, will lead the session with a focus on the common injuries of the adolescent runner – their biomechanics and anatomies, diagnoses and treatments.Dr. Erali is a native of New York and is board certified in podiatric surgery. He has practiced podiatry for 32 years. He is a graduate of Cornell University, earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Cortland State Teachers College and received his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) from New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Erali specializes in corrective foot surgery, pediatric foot evaluations, nail care, diabetic foot care, sports medicine (running clinics) and traumatic injuries. Dr. Erali has a special interest in working with runners.  He is an RRCA Certified Coach and has run in more than 30 marathons.

Nutrition and How it Affects Your Body as You Age   

Ashley HAshley Hofeditz, a Memphis based registered dietitian certified by the American Dietetic Association in weight management, will lead this session focused on how nutrition affects your running as you age.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Preventing and Overcoming Running Injuries

Ellen WalkerEllen Walker PT-Senior Physical Therapist at Summa Health System Outpatient Rehabilitation at the Tallmadge Recreation Center will lead this session focused on preventing and recovering from running injuries. Walker assists the Medical Director for the Akron Marathon in coordinating medical services along the race course and at the finish area medical tent. She has spoken to various professional and community groups on the topics of running gait analysis and common running injuries and prevention. She is an avid runner completing 14 marathons and 27 half marathons in her 30+ years on the road, trail and track. She has been a coach for youth cross country and track programs for 7 years.
